Self-hosting means taking control of your own digital infrastructure instead of outsourcing it and hoping for the best.

The use cases are wide-ranging: your own cloud storage solution instead of Google Drive or Dropbox, your own Git repository instead of GitHub, your own analytics tool instead of Google Analytics, your own password manager, your own mail server, your own communication platform...

This way, you know exactly where your data is stored and avoid unwanted external access. But that also means taking personal responsibility: You’re in charge of updates, backups, and availability. In return, the infrastructure truly belongs to you. You pay fair and transparent prices without monthly SaaS fees that increase as the feature set grows. And you’re independent of decisions that big-tech corporations make for you.

Don't be afraid to take ownership of your tech stack. We're here to help.

Not everyone who values digital independence has to build their own data centers. We’ve taken care of that for you. All you have to do is take the step of owning your own tech stack. Our goal is to support you wherever you need it: with one-click apps, detailed technical documentation, countless tutorials, a reliable and transparent pricing structure, and products designed by developers for developers. With 24/7 support, self-hosting has never been easier.

Forgejo explained

Forgejo is an open-source platform for self-hosted Git, developed and maintained by an independent community. With these 7 tips, you're sure
to succeed with self-hosting

Self-hosting rarely fails because of technical issues. Most of the time, it fails because people are too afraid to even get started. Here are seven tips to help you get started. You can find even more help in Hetzner Docs.

Learn the basics before you start

Ports, firewalls, DNS. If you understand these three concepts, you’ll avoid the most common frustrations when getting started. You don’t need to be a networking expert, but knowing why a service isn’t accessible and how to troubleshoot the issue is the most important step toward independence. This is the best hour you can invest before you get started. Our support team is, of course, here for you in case of an emergency. After that, you can figure out which parts of your stack are easiest to host yourself as an alternative and which ones should be prioritized for the move to a self-hosting solution with your independence in mind. Then decide where you want to start.
