Block Storage
for Cloud Server
Additional storage for your
cloud projects
Volumes offer you the option of expanding your cloud servers with SSD-based block storage.
Volumes can be easily scaled up to 10 TB at any time. Up to 16 volumes are possible per cloud server. Each data block is stored on three different physical servers. This redundancy ensures high failure and data security.

Block Storage vs. Object Storage
What is the difference between volumes and object storage?
Volumes (block storage) and object storage differ primarily in their data model and access. Block storage behaves like a locally connected hard drive: it is mounted on a cloud server, offers very low latency, and is suitable for workloads with high I/O requirements such as databases. Object storage, on the other hand, stores data as individual objects in S3-compatible buckets, accessible via HTTPS/API. Objects are not modified in place, but rather re-versioned. While block storage uses fixed, expandable volumes, object storage scales virtually unlimited and is ideal for backups, media, or global distribution.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What are Hetzner Cloud Volumes and what are they used for?
Hetzner Cloud Volumes are SSD-based, network-attached block storage that you can flexibly attach to your Cloud Servers to expand their storage capacity. They behave like an additional hard drive and are ideal for data-intensive workloads, databases, or log storage.
-
What sizes are available, and can I change a volume’s size later?
A volume can range from 10 GB to 10 TB. You can increase its size at any time, but shrinking is not possible. After enlarging a volume, you must manually extend the filesystem within the operating system.
-
How does Hetzner ensure data redundancy for volumes?
Each data block of a volume is stored on three different physical servers within Hetzner’s data centers (triple replication). This ensures data availability even if hardware components fail.
-
How many volumes can I attach to a Cloud Server, and can multiple servers access the same volume simultaneously?
You can attach up to 16 volumes to a single Hetzner Cloud Server. However, a volume can only be attached to one server at a time and cannot be used simultaneously by multiple servers in a writable state.
-
In which environments can I use volumes?
Volumes are designed specifically for the Hetzner Cloud and can only be attached to Cloud Servers. They cannot be used directly with dedicated servers.
